My wife’s mobile phone was old, battered and not at all smart, in either the sense of looks or the sense of being a smartphone. The screen was the size of a postage stamp and it had keys, because she hates touch-screens. But time and technology waits for no man or woman and she finally succumbed to looking for a new phone, though she was not happy at the thought of using a touch screen. I did point out that these days you have to be multi-tasking and know how to use all the latest technology, and not be a hermit in a cave ignoring technology.

Finally she chose a phone and on Saturday we decided we would go and buy one. Her chosen phone was the huge (compared to my Alcatel smartphone) Samsung J7. It was so big you could use it to knock nails into wood, but that was what she wanted, despite not wanting a touch screen phone.

Once we got home out came the box and then came the questions. “How do I do this?” “What does this do?” and so on. My answer to that was, look at the instructions.

Ten minutes of frantic searching later and Jo could not find any instructions. What we did discover though was information on instructions and how to obtain them, in Italian! Italian? Greek I can understand, English and even Russian as there are large expat communities of both. Even, at a pinch, Israeli as expats from Israel are coming to Cyprus more and more. But there are very few Italians living here.

So, to cut a long story short, I eventually, after much searching, found the instructions online… all 87 pages of them! I printed them out and for some unknown reason our Epson air-printer stopped at page 76. Why? Who knows, but it was late on Saturday so I turned off the PC and printer, handed the instructions to my wife and told her to have fun.

The next day, turning the PC and printer on, the printer decided to print the instructions again… all 87 pages this time. I sometimes hate technology!

And the phone? My wife took to it like a duck to water. Come to think of it, her phone’s so big if she bought another one she could go skiing in the Troodos mountains this winter. Now that’s what I call multi-taking.
