It’s the end of the hunting season and we can look forward to the summer and a bit of peace and quiet… no sooner said than we seem to have had an all out war declared up the road.

With what sounded like machine guns blazing followed by two Russian built Mil attack helicopters buzzing overhead I was getting a little concerned this morning. So a quick scan of the news gave no indication of a problem, only that there had been reports of a threat against Russian aircraft.

Obviously we always have the threat of conflict via Turkey and who knows if they will invade again, as in 1974. These days we have Turkey ranting about the gas discovered in Cyprus’ waters being theirs. This is to do with the EEZ, Exclusive Economic Zone. The fact that the US has now recognised the Cypriot right to develop these resources has annoyed Turkey. Then we have Turkey’s Erdogan threatening to Give Trump a Lethal Ottoman Slap and the attempted murder of a Russian ex-spy in Britain all going a long way to making people here a little nervous.

So, whatever it was I was mistaken to think it was machine-guns. Could it be someone doing some very rapid riveting. Nah, this is Cyprus after all and the favourite Cypriot saying is Siga, siga… Slowly, slowly.
