British Prime Minister, Theresa May, has said in the British Parliament that she believes the Russians were behind the use of a nerve agent, Novichok, in an attempt to murder a Russian ex-spy and his daughter, in Salisbury, Wiltshire. There was no pussy-footing about with this statement and she gave Putin a deadline in which he must answer her charge.
Whatever Putin says it seems there can be little or no doubt that Russia is to blame for this attack which, in reality, is an attack on Britain and therefore an attack on NATO. If Britain decides to invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, what do you think the response would be? I’m sure all members would rally to Britain’s side… but I’m also convinced there would be one country that doesn’t rally to Britain’s call – the United States of America.
Of course, I think all right-minded Americans would want to rush to a fellow NATO member’s aid, but the current President of the United States is not, by any stretch of anyone’s imagination, right minded. With the obvious bias Trump has to Russia against the advice of his own national security personnel, it would seem pretty clear Trump has a lot of explaining to do to Robert Mueller.
That’s why I think Theresa May will call a meeting of COBRA and decide to respond to this challenge by going it alone, in order not to embarrass what was once a staunch ally. No matter what Trump is guilty or not guilty of, the British PM will probably not want to be seen embarrassing Trump… but I do hope I’m wrong. Time will tell.
