I’ve flown to may countries around the world with many airlines, some great others dire. But I’ve never experienced such a mixed bag of surly ground staff, great cabin and flight crew, ancient aircraft, cramped seating with no leg room, seat changes from those booked months earlier with no explanation and indifferent time-keeping.

Mussolini, the Italian Dictator from the 1930s and through the war once famously made the trains in Italy run on time. It’s a great pity someone can’t make the planes do the same thing.

My flight from Milan Linate to Rome was an hour late taking off yesterday and on top of that the flight from Rome to Larnaca in Cyprus was also an hour late. When I asked the staff at Linate why there was a delay I got a surly reply of “look at the board for information.” In a similar incident when I booked in at Linate, the same girl asked another member of staff if a person with a British passport can fly into Cyprus. Apart from anything else, madam, the answer is yes because until March 2019 I’m still an EU citizen so do your job and less of the ill advised crap in a language you think I don’t understand.

Then we have the aircraft. They were both pretty old, so much so they we creaking, shaking and rattling and that was at standstill. The seating was so cramped and no room at all for stretching my legs, I just thank goodness nobody sat in front of me on either flight. I don’t think I would have enjoyed crushed legs if the seats had been pushed back.

The cabin crew were pretty old but honestly, they worked out to be great because they’ve been there, done the flights and know how it all works and how to keep customers happy.

All in all, not at all a good experience and in future I’m avoiding Alitalia as much as possible.
