Ruins of Bradgate House in what is now Bradgate Park

Do any of you writers out there use any special conventions for naming a character, place or object.

I seem to be developing it as a habit. In my last novel I named a hotel after a small hillside where I used to live. And in The Brittle Sea I’ve named my main character after a famous rock star and his ship is named The Lady Jane.

The ship’s name is for Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for 9 days before having her head chopped off. She was born in Bradgate House, Leicestershire, which happens to be near where I was born in Leicester. Bradgate House is one of England’s lost country houses and is now a ruin. It was once a magnificent Tudor mansion.

Not far from Bradgate is  Kirby Muxloe, which has an even more impressive fortified Manor House, know locally as Kirby Muxloe Castle.

Kirby Muxloe Castle, Leicestershire

Leicestershire has a rich history dating back to Roman times and so I have a lot of names I can use on my novels. Names that will probably never be used up before I slip of this mortal coil.
