Fear me you lords and lady preachers ,
I descend upon your earth from the skies.

Those few words, the opening lyrics to Seven Seas of Rhye, opened my mind and my heart. This was the 2nd opening chapter of my 1970s in 1973. With Queen’s ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ already in my head and causing a profound change in my attitude and desires out of life, this third singles offer from Queen in 1973 set the seal to my new era.

The release of the new film about Queen has stirred up some lovely memories of my favourite rock band.

Ahh, those were the days. My first intro to Queen was Keep Yourself Alive but it was  Seven Seas of Rhye that sealed my love of Queen and ever gnawing feeling in me that there was more to life than a good car and work. That was forty-odd years ago. Even today, I can’t sit still when Queen are playing on the radio. That’s why I love to listen to Sounds of the Seventies with Johnnie Walker on BBC Radio 2 on a Sunday afternoon. The memories come flooding back.

Of course, being an old duffer these days probably means the current generation of teens and early twenties think our age group are old and fuddy-duddy, but we had a great time back in the seventies and the best bit is there wasn’t a PC, Mac, Android or iPhone in sight. We flew by the seat of pants back then and if your car broke down in the middle of nowhere, you were guaranteed a long walk home.

My favourite Queen song has to be Bohemian Rhapsody followed closely by Killer Queen, Keep Yourself Alive and Seven Seas of Rhye. What’s your favourite Queen song?

She slumped forward, gazing into the man’s dead eyes. “Fuck! I’m so dead,” she muttered as blood seeped onto her lips, lips that suddenly turned to a broad smile…
