So, what do you have to go through to be an indie author who works? A lot of gritting of teeth, that’s what.

I’ve managed to write a dozen books over the years, both fiction and non-fiction, which at times seemed like being part of a marathon. My first novel, Operation Werwolf, a WW2 action adventure, took years to write. I started it around 2004 and it was published in 2013. And it hasn’t become any easier, time-wise, with growing experience and confidence in my writing. I’ve tried using time management techniques and that has helped, but my main job of designing personalised t-shirts etc., for printing and embroidery has to take precedence. So how do you find the time to write? Well, that’s exactly it, you have to find the time and even if you only have five minutes, you can still get a fair bit done.

I seem to leave my writing to the last minute, so I actually find it easier to get up early in the morning and do some writing… but only when the demands of my two springers and my wife have been met. A kiss and a cuddle in the morning goes a long way, and that’s only the dogs!

It’s like everything that you want to do well, you have to work at it and put the hours in. My main way of finding time to write, other than getting up early, is catching snippets of time here and there and getting as much down as quickly as possible. At least that way the ideas, the outline of a story, are being committed to paper as it were. But even when you add up all these snippets, you still have to go over what it is you’ve written and edit it. It’s all a matter of time and timing. As the ancient Romans said, Tempus Fugit. Time flies. Isn’t that the truth.
