Members of the Maquis in La Tresorerie – from Wikipedia

If you’ve paid nodding attention to Star Trek over the last few years you will have heard of the Borg. Human Cyborgs most famous for their saying, “Resistance is futile.” Well, I hate to break it to them but history proves otherwise. Resistance to hatred, invading occupiers, political corruption, racial bigotry or just pain old resistance to change, has a long and sometimes noble and heroic history.

The most obvious resistance is where natives of a land have been invaded and they organise and become resistors. Boadicea of the Iceni springs to mind for resisting the Roman Empire in ancient Briton, as does the French Maquis during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II.

But the most important resistance that should have occurred in the early 20th century, yet didn’t in any meaningful and decisive way, was the resistance to fascism in Germany. Hitler came to power riding on the crest of wave against the political establishment and an economy that was in tatters after World War I. Through trickery, deceit, murder, lies and a gullible population Hitler managed to grab power and the slide toward war was inevitable.

There was some resistance and opposition to the Nazi regime ranged from non-compliance with regulations to open attempts at the assassination of Hitler. Perhaps most heroic were the small number of German students who opposed the Nazis. In 1942 in Munich a fledgling resistance movement was formed by university students, the White Rose resistance group. The main leaders, Hans Scholl, his sister Sophie and professor Kurt Huber and others were arrested by the secret police for distributing six anti-Nazi pamphlets they had co-authored.

Within hours of their arrest, Hans and Sophie Scholl and another ringleader, Christopher Probst, were beheaded in Munich’s Stadelheim Prison. Hans Scholl’s last words were “Es lebe die Freiheit!” “Long live freedom!” Not long after other students involved in the movement were also arrested and executed.

Today we have a resistance movement in a land that was once hailed as the shining beacon of democracy but in the last year has gained a more tarnished image. The resistance in the United States of America is to a new would be totalitarian dictator, Donald J. Trump. With respect to dictators, Trump doesn’t have the brains for the job and by surrounding himself with even more incompetent people his rule is about to come to an end and we can all breath a sigh of relief when the Trump Gang are finally jailed… or can we? Those who voted for Trump, those outside forces who helped engineer Trump’s victory, they will still be free to do the same again. You cannot stop people voting but you can do more to educate the population. America and the rest of the free world need to tighten their belts and ensure what happened in pre-war Germany and is currently happening in the USA can never happen again.

I would hate to live in a world with no equality for gender, race, creed, colour or beliefs. A world based on one view would be terrible. Give me diversity and I’ll show you a powerful and vibrant world that’s more than fit for purpose.

Resist! It’s not futile.
