Hotel life isn’t for everyone, but I’m seriously considering retiring to the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia.
The hotel of choice for my stay in Lake Como, Italy, was this hotel and it turned out to be an excellent choice. Which is what you would expect for a hotel that has all the hallmarks of excellence and is not only grand in name but grand in style and quality.
But let’s not get carried away, there are always a few odd niggles here and there and I did have an issue or two. On the second day it sounded like a herd of elephants were having a disco above me. It turns out the outside bar area was directly above my room and the bar staff were preparing for a wedding reception, which I’ll forgive because the wedding guests looked well and truly happy when I looked in on their gathering going into dinner. On the subject of dinner, the food was superb but I did have a problem with soggy spinach with a cod dish. Both the cod and spinach seemed overcooked or even defrosted from frozen and microwaved for too long to heat through. Other than that the food was excellent and there was lots of it. I need to go on a serious diet before my next trip!
But niggles are soon forgotten and it’s the staff that make a good hotel great, and there are some seriously good staff at this hotel. From Fabio in the concierge’s office whom I had exchanged emails concerning a few questions that were answered promptly. To the ladies in the dining room who were always happy and smiling and to the girls serving drinks. Oddly the ladies seemed happier in their work than the men, with the exception of Fabio. Two of these ladies stand out and I regret never learning their names so I can’t name them. A blond girl with a pony tail in the dining area had a great smile and the girl in the bar with short blond hair had the broadest of beaming smiles every time I went in and she worked like a Trojan. Even during a thunderstorm when she was picking up stacks of chairs and placing them on the inside for guests not brave enough to stand outside in torrential rain, me included, the smile stayed on.
Of course, there are always staff we all forget to thank for their unswerving devotion to our well being, the maids who clean our rooms. I have to say I have never stayed in a hotel, and I’ve stayed in many, that can clean a room so quickly and to such a perfect standard. I take my hat off to them because they are marvelous.
If you get the chance to stay in Lake Como then use the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia and if you can upgrade to a room with a balcony. This makes all the difference when you wake up in the morning to such a view of the lake that your day is immediately a special day. I exchanged emails with Fabio on this and when I arrived the room was ready and waiting. And what a room with that fabulous view and it wasn’t expensive to upgrade. I seemed so close to the lake that the small road that runs in front of the hotel didn’t seem to be there. It was as if I was standing just above the lake with nothing between me and this grand view from a grand hotel.
A thoroughly enjoyable stay in Lake Como was made so special by this hotel and it’s fantastic staff.
I can’t wait to return.
